Ford Chicanes Silk Necktie. At Circuit de la Sarthe in 1990, two chicanes (small curves interrupting a long straight) were placed in the 6km Mulsanne straight in order to slow new turbo Le Mans Prototypes. As speeds were reaching as high as 400 km/h and resultant crashes becoming extraordinarily violent and deadly, the FIA decreed it would no longer sanction a circuit which had a straight longer than 2 km (1.2 mi).
